Tax Transparency and Exchange of Information - Mechanisms and their application - 2 Part Seminar

Session 1: The increase of tax transparency and the rise in automatic exchange of information in the fight against tax evasion.

The first session of this two-part seminar on tax transparency and automatic exchange of information will look into the legislative changes and the events which led to an increase in the demand for transparency within the field of taxation, and the rise in exchange of information.  The session will also go into technicalities on the application and interpretation of FATCA and CRS, which have brought individual tax payers within the scope of automatic exchange of information.

The Speakers:

Ramon Navarro is a manager at PwC Malta, he graduated as a lawyer from the University of Malta in 2009.  After obtaining an LL.M. from Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan focused mostly on international tax and in particular information exchange on tax matters, Ramon has specialised in the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) and is part of the PwC Automatic Information Exchange team.  In addition, Ramon also assists in corporate law related matters, and handles queries regarding general international tax advisory as well as Maltese employment law.

 

 

Chris Mifsud Bonnici is a senior manager at PwC Malta.  He is a dual Maltese and English qualified lawyer, who specialised in International Commercial Law at Kings' College, London in 2009 after graduating as a lawyer from the University of Malta in 2008.  He is also an associate of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).  After working for number of years in the PwC office in London, Chris joined PwC Malta where he is part of the Pwc Automatic Information Exchange team focusing on the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) and the Common Reporting Standard (CRS).  Chris also assists in corporate law related matters, general tax advisory projects and also has a particular focus on the asset management industry.

Session 2: Further mechanisms assisting tax authorities in tackling corporate tax avoidance

The second session will examine the recent drive towards increased tax transparency in curbing aggressive tax avoidance by multinationals.  Following from the OECD BEPS project, the EU has increased its focus on tax transparency through the introduction of Country-by-Country Reporting amongst other initiatives which the speakers shall be delving into.

Marc Alden is the leader of the Deloitte Malta tax practice and also heads the Financial Services Tax Group in Malta.  Marc has more than 20 years'experience in the Deloitte Malta tax practice and has during this time provided consulting services in various tax practice areas.  Marc practices primarily in the field of corporate taxation and has advised international clients across a number of industry sectors including financial services, oil and gas and gaming, taking a leading role in a number of international  transactions including cross-border acquisitions and restructuring projects.  Marc is also actively involved in advising clients and working with the local financial services community with respect to matters related to FATCA and CRS as well as more generally with regards to developments relating to automatic exchange of information, including Country-by-Country Reporting.

 

 

Luca Pace is a member of the international tax team withing Deloitte Malta's tax practice.  During his period with Deloitte Malta, Luca has been involved in a number of advisory engagements for clients across a number of industries with an emphasis on financial services.  Luca is a key member of the automatic exchange of information team and has experience on a number of advisory assignments in relation to FATCA, CRS and, more recently, Country-by-Country Reporting.
