2022: A Year in Review

Dear Member

As 2022 draws to a close we reflect on the work undertaken by the Institute these past twelve months as we continue to work, through the effort of the members of the the various technical committees who volunteer their time and expertise, supported by the Institute's Chief Technical Officer, Sarah Cassar Torregiani.

This year has seen a change to the constitution of our Direct Tax Technical Committee, in recognition of the complexity of the subject matter and the need for specialisation and focus, to be able to address the issues arising and to drive more value for members. To this end, the Committee was split into three sub-committees:
- International Tax sub-committee: Chairperson John Ellul Sullivan
- Domestic & Compliance sub-committee: Chairperson Daniel Caruana
- Personal Tax sub-committee: Chairperson Edward Attard

Together with the Indirect Tax Technical Committee (Chaired by Chris Borg) and the Professional Affairs Committee (Chaired by Edward Attard), the MIT continues to contribute to the discussion on tax policy and developments, support the Office of the CfR and other local bodies and assist in the creation and provision of resources and educational initiatives.

2022 Developments at the MIT

In 2022 the MIT council welcomed new members, Sarah Casolani and Trudy Marie Muscat. Trudy assumes the role of Chairperson of the Education Committee, formerly occupied by Rachel Zarb Cousin who was appointed Secretary to Council. Rachel succeeds outgoing and longstanding council member Ritianne Camilleri Galea. The Institute takes this opportunity to thank Ritianne once again for her contribution to the Institute over the years.

2022 has seen significant changes to the MIT's administration team. Fiona Vassallo and Roberta Deguara, who ably supported the Institute through the challenges of 2020 and 2021, moved on at the start of the year, after handing over the reins to Sharon Cusens, our new CEO. We wish Fiona and Roberta all the best for their future endeavours.

Under Sharon’s leadership the Institute’s activities are co-ordinated by Francesca Sciberras, the new Academic Co-Ordinator, and the administration team comprised of Charlene Cutajar and Maria Pisani, all of whom joined the MIT team this year.
