Dear MIT Member

The Institute has been contacted by Mr Marvin Gaerty and Dr Renald Micallef who are in the process of setting up a Taxpayers' Union and are seeking founder members of this organisation.

While the MIT Council has determined that it would not be appropriate for the MIT to be a member of the proposed Taxpayers’ Union, or to be affiliated therewith, the following information is being ciculated to MIT Members for their awareness of the inititaive:

The declared objectives of the Maltese National Taxpayers’ Union are to:

  1. Promote fair, efficient, and transparent taxation.
  2. Advocate for fiscal responsibility and accountability in Public Spending.
  3. Encourage public understanding of fiscal policy and the economic impact of taxation.
  4. Represent the collective interests of taxpayers before the Government, public authorities, institutions, and the media.
  5. Conduct or commission and publish research, reports, and policy proposals related to taxation and fiscal management.
  6. Cooperate with other organisations, locally and abroad, that share similar objectives.

This union is to be a voluntary, non-profit, non-partisan, and independent body to be established in accordance with the Voluntary Organisations Act (Cap. 492) and the relevant provisions of the Civil Code (Cap. 16, Article 28 et seq.).

The union is neither a workers’ union nor a trade union and will not provide individual fiscal professional advice or services. It is not within the purview of the union to compete with professional tax advisors.
