Dear MIT Member The Malta Institute of Taxation is of course well aware of the significant impact that the COVID-19 outbreak is having on tax practitioners. It has caused us to change how we live and how we work. A few weeks ago, in line with Health Department Directives, the MIT began transitioning its tax courses to an online format in view of the COVID-19 developments. The MIT Course on Taxation and the MIT Course on Tax Compliance are being held via video-conference. Similarly, we will not be holding physical seminars until such time as public gatherings are permitted, and therefore, all previously scheduled seminars have been postponed. If you have booked and paid for any of these seminars, you will be contacted directly by the MIT Office concerning credit against future events or refunds. It is uncertain how the COVID-19 outbreak will continue to develop, for how long the current health measures will remain in place and what other measures may be implemented. We will of course continue to monitor and evaluate the situation and to take decisions concerning our events, at all time prioritising the health of our lecturers, staff and attendees. In the meantime, we will be running tax webinars, to assist members and non-members in meeting their CPE requirements. Details of these events will be made available shortly on the Seminars, Workshops & Events page on the MIT Website. The COVID-19 situation has necessitated swift reaction to address the economic impact, and as things develop rapidly, we practitioners look to official guidance, where available, and to each other to understand how legislative changes and special measures may impact us and our clients. In this regard, the Malta Institute of Taxation would like to invite its members to participate in a webinar on the COVID-19 Economic Measures (see below).
The MIT has been in constant dialogue with the relevant local authorities giving input on measures and proposals whenever requested to do so and proactively reaching out with suggestions whenever we felt it was appropriate to do so. We will continue to interact with Government and other stakeholders on all matters concerning taxation during these challenging times and invite our members to reach out to us with any suggestions or areas of concern on matters concerning taxation and we will evaluate how, if at all, the Institute may involve itself with the matter in question. In the meantime, we thank you for your ongoing support of the Institute. Keep safe! Conrad Cassar Torregiani President – Malta Institute of Taxation
