MIT Short Course on VAT Compliance

The MIT Short Course on VAT Compliance is a 5-lecture course which covers the principles underpinning VAT reporting (key principles and practical examples) and the main practical aspects of VAT reporting, namely VAT registration, invoicing & record keeping and completing a VAT return (art. 10) and related documentation.

This course is suitable for accountants, lawyers, financial controllers and other individuals who work in the field of VAT compliance.

The MIT Short Course on VAT Compliance  is comprised of 5 Lectures. Participants have the option to follow the full programme or any one or more lectures [Lectures 4 and 5 have to be taken as a set]

  • Lecture 1: 19/02/2024 (17.00 – 20.00): VAT concepts and salient principles – the foundation of VAT Reporting
  • Lecture 2: 26/02/2024 (17.00 – 19.00): VAT Registration – the options and obligations
  • Lecture 3: 04/03/2024 (17.00 – 19.00): VAT Records & documentation – Tax Invoices & fiscal receipts
  • Lecture 4: 11/03/2024 (17.00 – 19.00): Completing a VAT Return* [Part 1]: Reporting Sales (incl. Recap Statement, Intrastat)
  • Lecture 5: 25/03/2024 (17.00 – 19.00): Completing a VAT Return* [Part 2]: Reporting purchases

*The VAT Return lectures will be based on the MIT Guide to Complete a VAT Return.

Saviour Bezzina

Saviour Bezzina is the senior manager responsible for indirect tax matters at the EY Malta office and forms part of EY’s Global Indirect Tax Network as a local knowledge contact.  He joined EY in July 2006 after obtaining the Bachelor of Accountancy (Hons.) from the University of Malta. He is a member of the Malta Institute of Accountants, holds a Diploma in VAT compliance, lectures regularly on VAT and indirect tax matters and is a member of the MIA and MIT Indirect Taxation Committees. Saviour was awarded the 2007 MIA prize as the best student who graduated in the Bachelor of Accountancy (Hons) Degree Course Group 2004/2006.

Brandon Gatt

Brandon Gatt, a Certified Public Accountant in possession of an ACCA degree, has been in the profession for the past seven years. He has been involved in VAT and accounting assignments both within and outside of Malta. Brandon has been specialising in VAT since 2016 and is currently leading the VAT division at Zampa Debattista.

In a relatively short period, Brandon has acquired the necessary experience vital to handling an ever-growing portfolio of diverse clients, operating within various sectors of the economy. Back in June 2017, he attended an intensive course in France, provided by VAT Forum; a partnership of International VAT experts, where he was provided with intensive training on the Articles of the EU VAT directive 2006/112/EC. He is now reading for the EU VAT Expert Degree.

Samantha Agius

Samantha is a Senior Manager within the Deloitte Malta Indirect Tax service line. She joined Deloitte in 2016, having worked for six years in a Malta-based financial services company.

Samantha is an experienced VAT specialist whose role primarily entails providing technical support and advice to entities carrying out business in Malta, particularly those operating in the financial services and gaming sectors.
