  • Part 1: 21/10/2024 (09:00 – 11:00) – Recent local and EU case-law on indirect tax and related matters

Speaker Louise Grima, will discuss a selection of cases decided by the Court of Justice of the EU in 2024 will be discussed during the seminar. The seminar will also touch upon domestic VAT cases decided during 2024.

  • Part 2: 04/11/2024 (13:00 – 15:00) – Recent local and EU case-law on direct tax and related matters

Speakers Christopher Bergedahl and Jake Desira, shall review, in detail, the most pertinent judgements concerning Income Tax delivered by local and EU courts for the period January to October 2024.

Dr Christopher Bergedahl

Christopher is a Director at Deloitte Malta within the Tax service line. He specialises in working with multinational clients providing support on financing, IP and value chain alignment projects. More recently, he has been involved in supporting Malta-based clients impacted by the global minimum taxation framework. He graduated summa cum laude in 2017 from the International Tax Center Leiden following which he served as a Teaching Assistant for the Fall Term of the 2017-2018 class. Christopher is warranted to practice in front of the Superior Courts of Malta and is a member of the Malta Institute of Taxation, the Malta Branch of the International Fiscal Association and the Malta Institute of Financial Services Practitioners. Furthermore, Christopher is the Chairperson of the International Tax Sub-Committee of the MIT’s Direct Tax Committee.

 

Dr Jake Desira

Jake Desira is an Associate at Fenech & Fenech Advocates and works within the Corporate and Commercial Department. His expertise primarily lies in commercial advisory and litigation services, competition law and tax litigation. Jake joined the firm in 2023. He earned his Bachelor of Laws degree and his Professional Award in Taxation in 2020. Following this, he completed his Master of Advocacy in 2021 and was admitted to the Bar in 2022. Furthermore, Jake is reading for a Master of Laws in International Business Law from the University of London, with particular focus on competition law and international commercial arbitration. Prior to joining the firm, he gained valuable experience in international tax advisory and tax controversy, at a Big Four firm in Malta.

Jake is a member of the ‘Malta Institute of Taxation’ and is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars related to tax controversy and litigation.

Louise Grima

Louise Grima is an Associate Director at KPMG Malta. She joined KPMG in 2015 after graduating with a Master in Accountancy from the University of Malta and has since worked on indirect tax compliance and advisory projects servicing clients in a number of industries including financial services, insurance, gambling and international trade. Louise was awarded the 2015 MIA Best Student of the Year prize for Master in Accountancy Group 2013/2015, holds a Diploma in VAT compliance. Louise has also successfully completed the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation with an overall distinction. Louise is a member of the Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA) and is the Chairperson of the Indirect Tax Committee within MIA. Louise regularly delivers courses and seminars relating to VAT, is a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta and also teaches ACCA.
