This session is part of the MIT Short Course on Personal Taxation that commenced on 3rd March 2025.

This session will deal with the subject of social security. It will look at the method of computation, the different classes and categories of insurable employment. The session will also look at cross-border situations with a particular overview of the EU directive and regulation on social security.

James Bonavia

James currently heads the People Advisory Services at EY Malta.  James obtained a Bachelor of Accountancy (Honours) degree in 1996 from the University of Malta.  He is a Certified Public Accountant by profession and an associate member of the Malta Institute of Accountants and a fellow of the Malta Institute of Taxation.  James has lectured extensively over the course of his career in both direct and indirect taxation.  He has worked in various areas in taxation, starting his career mainly in corporate and personal taxation and gradually moving on into tax advisory, VAT, M&As and restructuring transactions and also into international taxation.  He has managed various corporate and personal tax portfolios over the years and managed various teams across a number of firms.
