MIT Tax Meets Tech Talk – Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications have are rapidly permeating and revolutionising various industries, and the tax sector is no exception. Streamlining of processes, data analysis to predict trends, automation of tasks and enhanced compliance through identification of errors are some of the areas which have been revolutionised by AI, which increasingly will have to be embraced by tax professionals operating in a technology-driven environment as we are today.
Technology and AI have been recognised as the tools necessary to achieve a “modern and adaptive” Malta Tax and Customs Administration (MTCA’s Strategic Plan for 2023-2025 – Delivering Transformation).

Acknowledging the importance of AI for the tax professional, its potential impact on day-to-day operations, and the role AI and technology will play in the administration and enforcement of taxation by the authorities, the MIT’s Tax Technology Committee is bringing an event entitled: Tax Meets Tech – Artificial Intelligence, which will explore AI and its role in the context of the tax professional and the tax administration. On the agenda:
▫️AI: What tax practitioners need to know (Niklas Schmidt, Wolf Theiss Vienna)
- Insights into AI for non-techs, from the perspective of a tax professional
▫️AI: A learning Machine Dylan Seychell (University of Malta)
- What does an AI tool do? What is its functionality? What tools do the tax administration use today and how are these expected to evolve?
▫️The use of AI in tax investigations by the MTCA (Manfred Barbara, MTCA) and Gavril Flores (Malta Digital Innovation Authority)
- What role do/will A.I. tools play in data collection and analysis for tax audit purposes? What is the level of human intervention? How will A.I. enhance enforcement and what are the issues envisaged for professionals and taxpayers?

- What are the risks and issues around reliability and authenticity? What other concerns and issues may arise for professionals, litigators and taxpayers?
