MIT VAT Practitioners’ Forum 2024

The second edition of the MIT VAT Practitioners’ Forum was held on 9 April 2024 at the Hyatt Regency Malta, St. Julian’s. Organised by the MIT’s Indirect Tax Technical Committee, the theme of this year’s forum was ‘Input Tax Deductions’, and the focus was the interpretation of the legislation and case-law around deductions and the issues arising in practice.

The event followed last year’s format, with two panel discussions, the first discussing matters of interpretation and the second addressing a number of practical considerations and obstacles encountered by VAT practitioners in practice.

The first panel discussion entitled “A Spotlight on….Input Tax Deductions” was moderated by Sarah Cassar Torregiani (MIT), with panellists Matthew Zampa (ZampaDebattista) , Graziella Demanuele Bianco (KPMG), Mirko Gulic (PWC) and Nico Sciberras (Malta Tax & Customs Administration) discussed a number of provisions of VAT legislation around input tax deductions including, those relating to attribution of input tax and adjustments for capital goods, and the manner in which these are interpreted in practice.

The second panel discussion focused on issues encountered in practice. Moderated by Chris Borg (Deloitte), panellists Saviour Bezzina (EY), Louise Grima (KPMG), Brian Debono (Malta Tax & Customs Administration) and Efrem Debono (NM Group) shared their views on some issues and obstacles encountered by practitioners around reporting of input tax deductions.

In advance of the second panel, delegates participated in round table discussions, sharing experiences on issues encountered in practice.

The Malta Institute of Taxation would like to thank all attendees for participating in this event and the panellists for sharing their time and expertise.
