ECOFIN agreement on proposal to reinforce data sharing in fight against cross-border tax fraud
6 May 2026
At the 5 May meeting of the ECOFIN Council, Member States agreed their position on a proposed amendment strengthening cooperation and VAT data sharing between national tax authorities, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), and the Eurofisc network of anti-fraud experts.
In November 2025, the Commission had put forward a proposal intended to provide a legal basis for the exchange of information and access to VAT data, enhancing the EU’s ability to combat VAT fraud against the financial interests of the Union. The Council of Ministers has reached agreement on the proposed reform, largely maintaining the objectives and approach of the Commission proposal.
