MIT Annual General Meeting 2026
The AGM was opened by the President of the MIT, Dr Conrad Cassar Torregiani, this marking the close of his 10-year term as President of the Institute.
Secretary General, Dr Robert Taylor East, presented the motion to amend the Statute & Bye-Laws of the Institute and provided an overview of the main changes. The Treasurer of the Institute, Mr Christian Vella, presented an overview of the Institute’s Financial Report. This was followed by reports on the 2025-2026 activities of the Institute by Chief Technical Officer, Dr Sarah Cassar Torregiani. Further detail on some of the technical initiatives in direct tax was provided by Dr Christopher Bergedahl, Chairperson of the International Tax Sub-Committee and Dr Trudy Muscat, Chairperson of the Transfer Pricing Sub-Committee, whilst the chairperson of the Indirect Tax Sub-Committee, Matthew Zampa, provided an update on the Institute’s work on VAT matters. An overview of the work and initiatives of the Tax Technology Committee and the Professional Affairs Committee in 2025-2026 were provided by the respective Chairpersons – Dr Ramona Cassar and Dr Robert Taylor East. Francesca Sciberras, Academic Co-ordinator of the MIT, provided an update of the Institute’s educational initiatives and events, including the plans for the MFHEA accreditation of additional specialised tax courses.
Council & President elections
The 5 Council Members whose term expired were reconfirmed as Council Members for a further two-year term.
Conrad Cassar Torregiani did not seek re-election to the Presidency of the Institute and retired as member of the MIT Council. Council member Dr Rachel Zarb Cousin’s nomination for Presidency of the MIT was confirmed, as was the nomination of Dr Timothy Borg Olivier to fill the vacant seat on Council.
The new MIT President, Dr Rachel Zarb Cousin, closed the AGM by thanking the outgoing President for his decades of service to the Institute, first as a Council Member and, for the past 10 years, as Council President.
