Digital taxation discussed at informal ECOFIN meeting

Digital taxation was discussed at an informal video conference of the ECOFIN ministers on 16 March 2021, ahead of the Euro Summit that will be held later this week.

Ministers underlined their continued support for the ongoing negotiations in the OECD, which are aimed at achieving a global and consensus-based solution by mid-2021 and the Commission confirmed that it is working on a legislative proposal for a ‘digital levy’, which will be designed as a source of additional own resources for the EU. It highlighted that this would be a separate instrument which should not be linked with the corporate tax rules that are being negotiated in the G20/OECD.

The Commission launched a consultation on the Digital Levy earlier this year (See MIT News 18 January 2021). The deadline for submitting feedback is 12 April 2021. Click here to HAVE YOUR SAY.
